LEAN Attends ELFA’s Capitol Connections program in Washington, D.C. May 13-14, 2015

By: Russ Kohl

On May 13 and 14 ELFA’s Capitol Connections program was held in Washington, D.C.

LEAN member attorney Peter B. Foster, Esq. (and over one hundred other other ELFA members) participated in the program.

The program basically entails ELFA setting up meetings with various members of the House and Senate (or their staff members), and then ELFA participants meeting with those members to explain ELFA’s position on a variety of policy issues that are of concern to the organization.

ELFA members were generally divided up in groups consisting of members of their own states, and then those ELFA groups proceeded to meet with Senate and House members (or their staff members) of their own states.

Peter participated in the New York group that met with Senator Chuck Schumer’s office, Senator Kirsten Gillabrand’s office, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney’s office and Congressman Joseph Crowley’s office. Among the specific issues discussed with them were the need for early action on the extension of expiring business tax provisions, the need to maintain interest deductions, and the need to repeal Section 1071 of Title 10 of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act which unnecessarily adds extensive data collection requirements to the credit application process. While the Senate and the House may not take up any action on these issues this year, Peter nevertheless felt that the meetings were very productive in that those Senators’ and Congresspersons’ offices that were not familiar with the issues (including some pending relevant legislation concerning Dodd-Frank), became familiar.
